Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced a significant update for families hoping to reunite with their loved ones. In 2025, IRCC will accept 10,000 applications under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), offering a valuable opportunity for Canadians to sponsor their parents and grandparents to join them in Canada.

The selection process will focus on individuals who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form back in 2020.  Rather than opening a new intake of interest forms, IRCC will randomly invite potential sponsors from the existing 2020 pool.  This means that families who did not submit an interest form in 2020 will need to wait for future announcements regarding new application periods.

For those seeking a faster way to reunite with their parents or grandparents, the "Super Visa" remains a practical alternative.  This visa allows parents and grandparents to visit their family in Canada for up to five years at a time, with multiple entries permitted over a 10-year period. It’s an excellent option for families who want to spend extended time together while waiting for sponsorship opportunities.

This announcement highlights IRCC’s ongoing commitment to supporting family reunification in Canada. For those in the 2020 pool, this update provides a clear pathway to move forward with sponsorship applications. For others, the Super Visa offers a flexible solution to keep families connected. Staying informed and prepared will be essential for navigating these processes effectively.

This development underscores the importance of family reunification and the steps IRCC is taking to make it a reality for more Canadians.
